Message from the Director
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Materials Discovery and Synthesis Center (MDSC) at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). Next-generation technologies can only become a reality if the right materials exist. New concepts in clean energy, quantum computing, and advanced manufacturing require unique materials with exceptional properties and performance.
The MDSC at UCI enables the creation of novel and unprecedented materials, with a focus on discovery of new compounds and microstructures at a rapid pace. We provide users with access to flexible materials synthesis tools capable of fabricating nanomaterials, two-dimensional thin films, and bulk specimens from a wide spectrum of metallic and ceramic systems. Computational materials expertise and common software packages provide insight on the quantum, atomistic, and mesoscopic scales to facilitate user research with predictive materials theory and simulation.
Our overarching goal is to enable materials innovations that unlock the potential of researchers across our campus and around the world. Please contact us to see how our capabilities can push your research to the next level.
Best regards,
Tim Rupert

Facility Manager
I graduated from UCI in 2017 with a focus in Chemical Engineering. I have spent most of my career as a process engineer, and have a strong background in electronics manufacturing. As our facility manager, I’ll make sure you have the tools to build any material!
